How to prepare your roof for a storm
In the midst of Storm Ciara, we take a look at what you can do to prepare your roof when there is storm on the way.
Next time there’s a big storm on the way, don’t batten down the hatches until you’ve checked that your roof is safe and secure.
Whilst the UK usually escapes very serious storms, storms have become more frequent and severe over recent years. Failing to prepare your roof for a big storm can result in expensive damage to your property.
Here are our top tips for preparing your roof ahead of the next big storm.
Inspect your roof
If a storm is expected, now’s a good time to inspect your roof for any weak spots or signs of damage. Getting any problems fixed ahead of a storm can prevent expensive damage occurring or roof tiles flying off and becoming a hazard during high winds.
Cut back nearby trees
If there are any trees located particularly close to your property, cut off any overhanging branches prior to a storm. Very windy or wild weather can cause branches to fly off and cause damage to your roof.
Clear your gutters
It’s likely that during a storm all kinds of debris will go swirling up in the air and end up in your roof’s gutters. If these high winds are accompanied by heavy rain a blocked gutter could result in water leaking into your property. Before the storm arrives, make sure that your gutters are clear to avoid running into problems.
After the storm
Once the storm has passed, it’s a good idea to inspect your roof again to see if it’s caused any damage and to clear the gutters of excessive debris.
