Top 5 Unique Uses for Slate
When we begin talking about slate, it’s no surprise that people automatically think slate roofing. This attractive, durable addition to any home is becoming a more popular choice with homeowners.
But what else can slate be used for? It can’t just be used for roofing, can it? If you have a bit of spare slate hanging around, we’ve put together a quick list of ideas of what you can accomplish with it!
Planters and Plant Pot Drainage
Breaking up the slate into smaller pieces and placing the shards into a plant pot allows drainage to prevent your compost from clogging up the holes at the bottom of the pot and killing off your plants.
You can also make your own planters from recycled slate. Gardener’s World has an excellent guide on how to turn your old or spare slate into an attractive, natural planter for your home or garden.
Being a durable material, slate makes an excellent addition to any home in the form of placemats and coasters. They are able to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use, as well as cope with those hot dinner plates without marking your furniture.
They also add an attractive touch of nature into your home, without being too intrusive.
If you have quite a bit of slate hanging around, you could break the flags up and turn it into an effective gravel covering for your pathways, driveways and even plant pots and flowerbeds.
Gravel is also an excellent addition to any garden as a form of security. It’s near on impossible to sneak around a property that has a gravel driveway, for example. The crunch of the slate underfoot can alert you to any visitors; wanted or otherwise, to your property.
It’s also a good animal deterrent if you are having trouble with animals doing their business in your flowerbeds; they seem to dislike walking on sharp stone!
Everyone loves writing lists, so why not incorporate a slate chalkboard into your home? Reusable and easy to wipe clean; slate makes the perfect surface for planning your life out and allowing for changes to be made with no waste at all.
Eco Friendly Walls
Recycled slate walls provide a sturdy and inexpensive partition for your garden.
It also provides an excellent habitat for wildlife! The small gaps between the slates allow for small animals and insects to take shelter. If you are looking to be a bit more eco friendly and want to encourage more wildlife to come into your garden, a slate wall is a good place to start.
